Course Description

This course provides students with hands-on practice under the supervision of a licensed massage theraapist. Students engage in the practice of various massage modalities learned in the Certificate of Competence in Specialty Massage Therapy.

Learner Outcomes

  • Demonstrate and apply basic principles of anatomy, physiology, pathology, kinesiology, and medical terminology in a clinical setting for massage therapy.
  • Demonstrate correct positioning and draping of clients for application of specialty massage techniques.
  • Apply principles of good posture and body mechanics to reduce the risk of injury to practitioner and client.
  • Demonstrate good hygiene, sanitation practices and infection control as requirements for massage therapy and as outlined by the State of Hawaii, Board of Massage Therapy and Department of Health.
  • Recognize indications and contrandictions for various situations and among different clientele for massage therapy.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the scope of practice as a massage therapist.
  • Demonstrate understanding of effective communication skills and socio-cultural differences and values in massage therapy practice.
  • Practice ethical behavior in massage therapy practice.
  • Demonstrate effective marketing, recruitment, and administrative skills in maintaining a steady client base.
