Course Description

This course is designed to acquaint the student with the ethical and legal responsibilities and scope of practice within Hawaii state of employment and delegation of the physician and the office assistant. Discussion focuses on proper documentation, federal and state guidelines, established policies, liability coverage, risk management and health laws and regulations.
 

Learner Outcomes

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs):
A.  Follow documentation guidelines.
B.  Institute federal and state guidelines when releasing medical records or information.
C.  Follow established policies when initiating or termination medical treatment.
D.  Understand the importance of maintaining liability coverage once employed in the industry.
E.  Perform risk management procedures.
F.  Comply with federal, state, and local health laws and regulations as they relate to healthcare settings.
G.  Define scope of practice for the medical assistant within the state of Hawaii.
H.  Describe what procedures can and cannot be delegated to the medical assistant and by whom within various employment settings.
I. Display compliance with Code of Ethics of the profession.
J. Recognize requirements of OIG (e.g. EMTALA, patient’s rights and responsibilities, advanced directives).
K. Recognize requirements for CMS (e.g. HIPAA, IMM, MSP, ABN, ABN, Condition Code 44, fraud and abuse).
L. Recognize requirements for other government agencies (e.g. TRICARE, VA, Medicaid).
