Course Description

This course teaches the student the basic office procedures in a medical setting, including planning office work, scheduling appointments, working with patients, communicating with patients and other healthcare professionals, handling mail and maintaining records, utilizing didactic method of instruction.

B. Identify accurate patient and record pertinent information.   
C. Prepare and maintain medical records.
D. Collect and record patient information (e.g. patient and guarantor demographics).
E. Recognize purpose for down-time or mass casualty procedures and reconciliation.
F. Document accurately.  Set up and maintain patient files.
G. Prepare and reconcile a bank statement and deposit record.
H. Establish and maintain a petty cash fund.
I. Perform routine maintenance of administrative equipment.
J. Maintain inventory equipment and supplies.
K. Exhibit professional communication by:
   1. Serving as liaison between physician and others.
   2. Interviewing patients effectively.
   3. Receiving, organizing, prioritizing, and transmitting information expediently.
   4. Performing fundamental writing skills including correct grammar, spelling, and formatting techniques (e.g. preparing prescriptions, documenting medical records,             etc.).
M. Demonstrate ability to give patient instructions.
   1. Advise patients of office policies, resources and procedures.
   2. Instruct patients with special needs.
N. Scheduling
   1. Identify accurate patient and record pertinent schedule information.
   2. Arrange and schedule location, equipment, and/or staff (resources).
   3. Identify insurance information required to schedule service (e.g. authorizations, medical policy, and referrals).
   4. Identify clinical information required to confirm service for a specific date and time (e.g. referrals, valid order).
   5. Pre-registration-Utilize the electronic patient index (EMPI) to ensure accurate patient identification and safety.
