Course Description

This course is an orientation to clinical laboratories and their organization is presented in this lecture and laboratory based course.  Proper collection of patient specimens is demonstrated and practiced. In addition, an introduction to clinical chemistry is presented with emphasis of accurate documentation and reporting laboratory results.
 

Learner Outcomes

Student Learning Objectives (SLOs):
A. Use a laboratory microscope properly.
C. Complete and accurately report chemical and microscopic urine exams.
D. Perform CLIA-waved tests that assist with the diagnosis and treatment such as an urinalysis exam including dip sticks and pregnancy tests.
F. Collect and streak a throat culture for microbiological testing.
G. Perform quick strep.
H. Perform wound collection procedures.
I. Recall the normal laboratory exam normal values.
J. Recognize abnormal values and non-valid specimen.
K. Instruct the patient in the collection of clean-catch mid-stream urine specimen (CCMS and 24 hour collection); collection of fecal specimens; collection of sputum specimens.
L. Understand the disease states associated with the abnormal values.
M. Understand vital importance of accuracy and measurements.
N. Practice quality control.
O. Demonstrate proper disposal of bio hazardous waste.
