Course Description

Students are introduced to techniques and procedures associated with the process of collecting blood samples. Focus will be on best practices to yield accurate and reliable test results. Students will learn correct procedures for performing common hematological tests, observing quality control guidelines, safety measures, and standard precautions to protect themselves and others from potential harm.

Learner Outcomes

Student Learning Objectives (SLOs):
A. Collect and label blood (venipuncture) with a syringe, vacuum system and butterfly.  
B. Obtain and process blood from capillary punctures.
C. Record and report lab results.
D. Correctly handle and process of the blood sample after collection.              
E. Recognize normal/abnormal lab values.
F. Perform selected CLIA-waived tests such as common hematological tests, chemistry testing, immunology testing..
G. Practice quality control.
H. Dispose of bio hazardous materials.
