Course Description

The course will introduce participants to the cultivating of taro in a lo’i (Wetland plot) system, the “Old Peoples” “World View” of “Spirit and “Heritage”, and how these concepts bind them to their environment that they live and work in. The course will provide inspiration in caring for taro through knowledge of its value as one of the purest and healthiest foods known to mankind, and that if cultivated and cared for properly, it can sustain a people for thousands of years. The course will review the concepts of Haloa, the everlasting breath of life, and Aloha, you give to me, I give to you, and together we live.

Learner Outcomes

  1. Gain an introductory understanding of the Hawaiian Perspective of Spirit, Nature, and Heritage.
  2. Understand the fundamentals of cultivating of taro in a lo’i (Wetland plot) system.
  3. Understand the sustainability of taro as a component of the Hawaiian food system.
  4. Understand the Hawaiian concepts of Haloa and Aloha.
