Course Description

Trauma First Response (TFR) is a one-day, 8-hour course that follows a curriculum provided by the National Association of EMTs and American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS CoT). The TFR course is geared towards providers at the EMR level. TFR teaches EMRs key principles in assessment of the mechanism, anatomy, and nature of traumatic injuries, and instructs first responders on appropriate treatment priorities. Participants in this course will be better prepared to optimize their important role in the state trauma system.

Non-state licensed and/or non-EMS providers may be admitted at the discretion of the course instructor/coordinator (these outside providers may reach the course instructor/coordinator using contact information provided within the course detail).

Learner Outcomes

  • Understand the kinematics of trauma
  • Appreciate the opportunities for EMR involvement in both primary and secondary injury prevention
  • Consider national, state, and local criteria for trauma triage og both single and multiple patient incidents
  • Conduct a systematic rapid trauma assessment
  • Expand knowledge of various types of traumatic injuries, and build skills for their management
