Course Description

Everyone in the workplace is required to convey ideas, events, and transactions on paper rapidly and concisely. Most people dislike writing letters or reports; however, effective writing is a skill that can be learned and continuously improved. In this action-oriented workshop, you will learn to develop and polish your letters. Instruction emphasizes formula writing, psychology, and style. 

Course Outline

1. Mechanics of Writing Well 

  • Make it active 
  • Eliminate unnecessary words 
  • Use plain English 
  • Get rid of redundancies and needless repetition
  • Keep it short, simple, and specific
  • Avoid expletives, excessive politeness, stereotyped language 
  • Do not use sexist language

2. Formula Writing

  • Most important point first: Details 
  • Second most important point: Details 
  • Third most important point: Details 
  • Action ending 

3. Writing Bad News Messages 

  • Buffer 
  • Reasons before refusal 
  • Minimize bad news 
  • Offer alternative, if appropriate
  • Off-subject ending 

4. Writing Persuasive Messages  

  • Benefit/promise
  • Build interest/picture
  • Prove 
  • Push 

 

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this module, the participant will be able to: 

  • Understand and demonstrate mechanics of writing well 
  • Understand and demonstrate formula writing 
  • Understand and demonstrate composing bad news messages 
  • Understand and demonstrate writing persuasive messages
