HLTH3025 - Health Career Pathway Connections

Course Description

The Health Career Pathway Connections Course (HCPC) provides 24 hours of professional development for Hawai‘i Department of Education health service courses teachers.  The course includes twenty hours of observation in a variety health education college classroom laboratories at Kapi‘olani Community College, plus a course orientation and debrief session, for a total of 24 hours.  The twenty four hours will provide insight into how health care education is delivered at the postsecondary level.  This knowledge will empower the health service teachers as they work to increase the number of well-prepared high school graduates that are college and career ready.

Because the college health program laboratory courses are taught by credentialed healthcare practitioners, the HCPC participants will also gain a realistic view of each healthcare profession they observe.   A University of Hawai‘i Certificate of Professional Development will be issued upon completion of the 24 hour class.  This course has been reviewed and approved for PDE Credit by the DOE Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Student Support.

The 20 hours of direct observation will be completed on an independent basis by each participant, scheduled by the college to meet the participant’s requests as much as possible.  The 20 hours may be scheduled between May 29^th and August 10^th, as well as September 4^th and November 21^st.  The 20 hours may be accumulated during the Summer and Fall, based on class availability.  Participants will attend a required orientation on May 29th OR August 29^th from 5:00pm to 6:30pm at Kapi‘olani Community College. 

Learner Outcomes

HCPC Objectives – At the completion of the HCPC, the participant will have:

• Observed best pedagogical practices in eight to ten college classroom laboratories in a variety of health care education programs, including:
  • Dental Assisting
  • Emergency Medical Technician
  • Massage Therapy
  • Medical Assisting
  • Medical Laboratory Technician
  • Mobile Intensive Care Technician
  • Nursing: Long-Term Care Nurse Aide
  • Nursing: Practical Nursing (PRCN)
  • Nursing: Registered Nurse Preparation (Associate Degree in Nursing)
  • Occupational Therapy Assistant
  • Pharmacy Technician
  • Phlebotomy
  • Physical Therapist Assistant
  • Radiologic Technology
  • Respiratory Care Practitioner
  • Surgical Technology

• Made the connections between the course content required in high school health science courses to prepare students to be successful in college level health education programs with what actually happens in the college classroom laboratories.

• A clear understanding of the various health professions and their scope of practice.
