Course Description

Congratulations...you made the decision to return to school! Has it been a while since you've studied? Have you previously taken an online course? Although times have changed, you can set yourself up for success. Brush up on technology, re-learn basic skills, and develop strategies to make your transition to college fun, motivating, and manageable.

Course Outline

  1. Introduction to Laulima (4 hours)
  2. Google email (2 hours)
  3. Google drive and docs (2 hours)
  4. Critical thinking-research, data gathering and analysis (2 hours)
  5. Basic grammar and writing skills (2 hours)
  6. Google calendar/time management (2 hours)
  7. S.M.A.R.T. goals and action plan (2 hours)
  8. Google slides (2 hours)
  9. Presentation skills training (4 hours)
  10. Capstone project presentation (2 hours)

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Navigate through the University of Hawaii's learning management system, Laulima.
  • Use Google tools (i.e., Google sheets, docs, slides, email and calendar).
  • Complete assignments that require researching, gathering, and analyzing data.
  • Complete written assignments (i.e., research documents, essays, etc.).
  • Deliver verbal presentations.
  • Organize their personal schedule to manage their time.
  • Achieve their S.M.A.R.T. goal(s) by implementing their action plan.

Recommendations

This program is designed for adult learners who are deciding to attend or returning to college after years of being out of school. Participants will review basic skills that will help to prepare them for college and to make the transition back into the classroom less intimidating and manageable. Topics will inlcude:

  • Computer skills - Laulima navigation and Google Suite (drive, docs, slides, sheets, email and calendar, etc)
  • Critical thinking - researching, gathering and analyzing data/information
  • Presentation skills - presenting information in front of an audience
  • Basic grammar and writing skills (focused on writing college essays, research documents, and other assignments)
  • S.M.A.R.T. goals - creating goals and an action plan for personal success
  • Organization skills to help manage time

The instructor will asses participants by:

  • Allowing participants to navigate through Laulima, access training materials, and utilize different tools (i.e., discussion forums) for the program.
  • Observing participants as they practice creating written documents (i.e., S.M.A.R.T. goals, action plan, writing assignments, etc.) with Google docs.
  • Observing participants as they practice critical thinking skills through research, data gathering, and analysis activities.
  • Evaluating written exercises.
  • Observing participants as they use Google calendar to organize and manage their time.
  • Observing participants as they verbally deliver their capstone presentation project (personal goals and plan to succeed in college).
