Course Description

Learn the skills necessary to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical aspects of a medical office.  Topics include: 1) preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine procedures and diagnostic testing; 2) HIPAA, patient confidentiality, legal aspects of healthcare and regulatory patient care issues; 3) recording and taking of vital signs, review and administration of medications, allergies and other pharmacology-related items; 4) laboratory procedures, phlebotomy and the proper techniques required to collect specimens for laboratory analysis; and 5)cardiology and the proper placement of leads when taking a 12-lead EKG.

Learner Outcomes

At the completion of this course, students will be able to:
1) Explain the responsibilities of the typical clinical medical assistant
2) Discuss and use medical terminology, including anatomy and physiology as well as circulation of the heart and blood vessels
3) Explain and document care and safety of patients, medical and legal aspects of care, and confidentiality and HIPAA.
4) Recognize and explain aseptic techniques, infection prevention, universal precautions, and proper use and disposal of bio-hazards and sharps.
5) Document patient medical histories, update patient medical files, and record vital signs.
6) Apply sterile dressings, prepare patients for x-rays, perform various injections, administer oral medications, and instruct patients on the proper usage of medications prescribed.
7) Perform 12-lead EKG and EKG strip analysis (P,Q,R,S,T wave form)

This Blended course format includes 140+ hours of online self-paced instruction and 16 hours of hands-on instruction on the island of Lanai.

Prerequisites

Completion of or pursuing a high school diploma or GED

Recommendations

Students who complete this comprehensive course will be prepared to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Medical Assistant (CCMA) national certification examination.
