Course Description

Japanese language class for HARIETT is a non-credit Japanese conversation course taught in English for students with no Japanese-language experience. The course introduces basic Japanese conversation with culture; covers social situations encountered by visitors from Japan or working in the hospitality and travel industry focused on hotel and restaurant business. Class lessons and exercises include basic greetings, asking directions, numbers, telling time, money matters, shopping, ordering food, counting various things, describing people and ideas, and hotel/travel-related situations. Pronunciation, listening recognition, daily phrases, basic vocabulary, and sentence patterns, and basic grammar structures will also be covered. Romaji (English alphabet writing system) will be introduced and used throughout the course for reading and writing purposes. Additional reading and writing systems of Japanese hiragana, katakana, and some Chinese characters will be introduced occasionally in the class. However, they are not a requirement.
