COM3049 - Cybersecurity in Healthcare
Course Description
The Certificate of Competence in Cybersecurity in Healthcare program is a four-month fully online professional development program that provides students with the entry-level skills, knowledge and ability to protect and defend the network systems in a healthcare cybersecurity environment and enter the workforce as an Information Security Analyst.
This program aligns with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework and the National Institute for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Program, and will cover the fundamentals in cybersecurity, healthcare and information technology.
Prior background in cybersecurity, information technology or healthcare is not required. What is required is the ability to think critically, problem solve, communicate effectively, a pursuit for lifelong learning and the being flexible to an ever-changing environment where cyber threats continuously evolve.
This program will utilize Laulima, the University of Hawaii learning management system where the content and assignments will be available. To access the content in Laulima, the following equipment is recommended:
- Access to a more recent model desktop or laptop, either Windows or Mac or Android or Apple mobile device
- Reliable high-speed (cable or DSL) Internet connection
- Internet browser such as Firefox, Chrome, Edge, or Safari
This program may include a few live online sessions. We will use Zoom (online conferencing software) to hold these discussions. To attend the live online sessions in Zoom, the following additional equipment is recommended:
- Recommended: webcam, headset with microphone, if your device does not already have a webcam and microphone
Learner Outcomes
By the end of the program, students will be able to develop the skills and knowledge needed by a workforce to protect and defend network systems, as further defined by the National Institute for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Program:
- Uses defensive measures and information collected from a variety of sources to identify, analyze, and report events that occur or might occur within the network to protect information, information systems, and networks from threats.
- Tests, implements, deploys, maintains, reviews, and administers the infrastructure hardware and software that are required to effectively manage the computer network defense service provider network and resources. Monitors network to actively remediate unauthorized activities.
- Responds to crises or urgent situations within the pertinent domain to mitigate immediate and potential threats. Uses mitigation, preparedness, and response and recovery approaches, as needed, to maximize survival of life, preservation of property, and information security. Investigates and analyzes all relevant response activities.
- Conducts assessments of threats and vulnerabilities; determines deviations from acceptable configurations, enterprise or local policy; assesses the level of risk; and develops and/or recommends appropriate mitigation countermeasures in operational and nonoperational situations.

Prerequisites
- Students should have access to a more recent computer and internet to access course content and complete assignments online.
- Students should have previous experience accessing the internet and know how to navigate websites.
- Students should have Adobe Reader installed on their device to view the course materials
