Course Description

Native Hawaiian plants were found growing in Hawai‘i, existing before humans arrived. About 90% of our native plants are found nowhere else in the world and are some of the most endangered (University of Hawai‘i, 2009). Understanding our diverse environment and the native plants that once grew will encourage sustainability and awareness of the depletion of our natural resources.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the different types of native plants and their characteristics.
  2. Explain their ancient Hawaiian and modern uses.
  3. Identify native plants in the garden on campus.
  4. Produce a diagram of plant features.
