COM3050 - Internet of Things (IOT)
Course Description
This course presents contemporary Information Technology topics on the Internet of Things. The purpose of this course is to maintain currency with rapidly changing technologies throughout the world, with an emphasis in Hawai‘i’s business industry. The Internet of Things is an emerging and rapidly growing area within IT. This course will be primarily organized around group projects using technologies associated with the Internet of Things.
Learner Outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- Describe its history
- Define and use its terminology
- Describe its concepts and features
- Apply skills in the creation and management of a networking and/or software systems
- Evaluate the implementation of the hardware and/or software system for efficiency and effectiveness
- Apply skills in the software or network installation, configuration, or modification
- Describe its relationship to other technologies
- Describe its impact on current business practices

This class includes one or more required online synchronous ONE-on-ONE meeting(s) with the instructor. Date(s) and time(s) for meeting(s) will be determined based on individual students’ schedules. One or more online synchronous CLASS or GROUP session(s) is/are required. Date(s) and time(s) for sessions will be determined based on students’ schedules. This class includes one or more exam(s) which is/are proctored synchronously ONLINE. Exam(s) will take place during regularly-scheduled synchronous online class sessions.
This course may require hardware and/or software supplies for hands-on activities up to $150. There is a course textbook for this course. Please contact Melissa Nakamura at mchar@hawaii.edu for more information on obtaining the textbook. The cost of the textbook is estimated at $50.
