Course Description

This course, taught by KapCC's Hospitality and Tourism department faculty, will provide participants with an appreciation of the current landscape of the global lodging industry, with a focus on relevant current events and trends that are shaping the accommodations sector of the visitor industry. You will gain a thorough knowledge of the foundational metrics, concepts, and definitions that are used today to define the performance and success of the lodging industry. Students will gain the ability to analyze various types of industry data and make strategic inferences based on industry defined approaches to analysis. This course also introduces the effective practices of revenue management, with an emphasis on insightful forecasting, to effectively manage rates and maximize profits in periods of both high and low demand. This course allows you to achieve an American Hotel and Lodging Association certification after successful completion of the course and exam. This certification is well recognized in the hospitality industry.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, HOST TBA will begin the spring semester in a synchronous remote format. Should the situation improve during the semester, it could become possible to meet in face to face class sessions. With the synchronous remote class format, participants will meet at the regularly scheduled times for the course, connecting remotely via Zoom. A synchronous format will allow you to simultaneously participate with the instructor and classmates in content delivery, projects and group assignments. you will be using the Laulima learning platform on a regular basis.

Prerequisites

Consent of Instructor.

This program includes live online sessions. We will use Zoom (online conferencing software) to hold discussions and practice hands-on skills. To attend the live online sessions in Zoom, the following equipment is recommended:

  • Access to more recent model desktop or laptop, either Windows or Mac or Android or Apple mobile device
  • Supported Operating Systems for desktop and laptop: Mac OS X with Mac OS 10.7 or later, Windows 10 or Windows 8 or 8.1 OR Supported Operating Systems for mobile devices: iOS 7.0 or later, iPad OS 13 or later, Android 4.0x or later, Kindle Fire HD
  • Reliable high-speed (cable or DSL) internet connection
  • Internet browser such as Firefox, Chrome, Edge, or Safari
  • Recommended: webcam, headset with microphone, if your device does not already have a webcam and microphone
