Course Description:

This webinar will address the experience of homelessness on O`ahu – from the demographics of homelessness to the factors contributing to each individual or family’s homeless situation. The presenter will also share the system for supporting and lifting people out of homelessness – how the City, State, and service providers work together to help end or avert homelessness for those in crisis.

Speaker Bio: Connie Mitchell has been Executive Director at IHS, The Institute for Human Services for 14 years. She earned both her BS and MS in Nursing from the University of Hawai`i. Professional experience includes managing a physician’s office, accreditation preparation, organizational and program development. Her career also includes financial planning, pastoral work, teaching mental health nursing at UH, healthcare administration as Director of Nursing at Hawai`i State Hospital and Program Specialist with the Hawai`i Adult Mental Health Division.

Woven into her efforts to end homelessness is a strong passion for social and environmental justice, advocacy for cross sector and system collaboration. She has served on boards for EPIC Ohana, Hawaii Workforce Development Council and Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the webinar, participants will learn:

1). the complex factors that often lead to homelessness.

2). the system of services and solutions that are currently available to address and support those in crisis.

3). how they can help.
