Course Description

ED 285 introduces principles and practices to classroom management. Creating positive and inclusive classroom environments, using proactive approaches to student behaviors, and providing positive behavior supports (PBS) will be examined. Learning styles and ways to keep students motivated and involved in their learning will be explored. Instructional planning, strategies, responses, approaches, and assessments to classroom and behavior management will be addressed. Students will discuss relevant issues and learn how to develop classroom discipline plans and individualized behavior plans.

Students should expect to spend a minimum of 6-10+ hours per week on the work required for this 14-week asynchronous, completely online course. Students should also have regular access to a desktop or laptop computer and internet/wi-fi access in order to complete coursework.

This course may be relevant to intended future teachers, educational paraprofessionals/teacher assistants, substitute teachers, tutors, parents who have students in a k-12 setting taking high-stakes tests, or anyone interested in considering/exploring the field of education.

Course Outline

Upon successful completion of ED 285, the student should be able to:

  1. Create positive and inclusive learning environments.
  2. Generate effective responses and proactive approaches to student behaviors.
  3. Problem-solve classroom management, behavior, and instructional issues.
  4. Develop classroom discipline and individualized behavior plans, integrating positive behavior supports (PBS).
  5. Apply relevant instructional strategies to maintain students' motivation and involvement in their learning.
  6. Create, conduct, and assess lesson plans for individual and group instruction.

This course is conducted fully online. This course is completely ASYNCHRONOUS. Students are not required to meet with each other and/or the instructor at a specific time. However, this class may include one or more OPTIONAL synchronous online activities. This course may also include field assignments that can be done virtually. The required textbook can be purchased or rented from an online source such as Amazon. The required textbook can be purchased at the Kapiolani Community College Bookstore. This class does not have proctored exams. Email the instructor (vogata@hawaii.edu) as needed for additional information and check your email account regularly for class notifications. To take an online class, you must have regular access to a desktop or laptop computer and a reliable internet connection.

This course may require field assignments to be conducted at a preK-12 school/classroom setting.

Refund/Drop Policy:

100% refund: Notification to Non-Credit Registration made 10 business days or more prior to start of course.

This course is also a writing intensive (WI) designated course which follows the WI hallmarks below:

  • W1: The class uses writing to promote the learning of course materials.
  • W2: The class provides interaction between the instructor and students in writing assignments.
  • W3: Written assignments contribute significantly (40%) to each student's course grade.
  • W4: The class requires a substantial amount of writing - a minimum of 4,000 words, or about 16 pages.
  • W5: Class size is restricted to 20 for meaningful professor-student interaction on each student's writing.

Prerequisites

Qualification for ENG 100 or qualification for ESL 100; and qualification for MATH 82 or Program Coordinator approval.
