Course Description

You can start your learning right here at PCATT with GIS Essentials (Using GeoMedia). GeoMedia enables you to bring data from disparate databases into a single GIS environment for viewing, analysis, and presentation. This introductory course will cover the core essentials of geographic information system theory and practice including:

  • What is mapping and GIS
  • GIS applications and real world practices
  • Projections, data, coordinate systems, scale, and more
  • Common GIS file types and methodologies
  • Digitizing and data capture (including aerial photography and GPS)
  • Spatial database design and use
  • Basic spatial analysis
  • Basic cartography and map production (symbolization, thematic maps, etc.)
  • Data quality and metadata issues

GIS is a tool now widely used in a diversity of fields and businesses including: Engineering, planning, transportation, law enforcement, environmental management, military and homeland security, public health management, archaeology, business and marketing, and many more. Learn how you can use GIS to further your career and enhance your technical skills.

This course will be the prerequisite for future classes on other GIS topics.

You will have ample opportunity to experience GIS through hands-on learning in a computer lab using the latest software.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, you will understand the core concepts of GIS and how it is used in various industries. You will be able to design and develop a GIS database and project using various data sources, prepare basic spatial analysis, develop detailed maps for production, and document your work.

Prerequisites

Computer literacy on a PC and a willingness to learn. Experience in CAD, database use and design, and graphics production helpful but not required.
