Course Description
The Hawai‘i EMS Experience program is designed to provide the individual direct observational insight as to what Emergency Medical Services is like in the islands. The program introduces what the scope of practice is for the EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic, provides exposure to clinical decision making, provides experience in out-of-hospital BLS and ALS treatment of the sick and injured, along with introducing concepts of public safety inter-dependency. This course is designed for the individual interested in a career in EMS along with providing exposure for out of state EMS professions who are interested in Hawai‘i’s EMS system.
Learner Outcomes
1. Define the role and scope of an EMT, AEMT, and a paramedic in the State of Hawai`i and define medical trauma, and pediatric emergencies.
2. Experience assessing the emergency situation, which includes obtaining a basic history and physical examination, establishing rapport with the patient and others, and managing emergency care, including extricating the patient.
3. Experience the initiation and continuation of emergency medical care including the recognition of presenting conditions and initiation of appropriate non-invasive and invasive treatments for: respiratory emergencies, cardiovascular emergencies, neurological emergencies, musculoskeletal emergencies, obstetrical emergencies, trauma and shock, and psychiatric emergencies.
4. Experience the establishment of rapport with the patient in a manner designed to decrease their state of crisis and explain the assignment of priorities of emergency treatment to a patient or group of patients
5. Experience the use a sequential and critical thinking process to gather the appropriate data, appraise its significance, take action, and evaluate the effects of that action upon the patient.
