Course Description

The first part of this class will focus on the important relationship between perception and communication when we receive message.  Making our perceptions of others as well as others' perception of us as accurate as possible is key to effective communication.  The topics covered will include identifying the perception process, understanding how we form impressions, and improving our perception and in turn our communication.  The second part of this class will focus on developing effective delivery techniques when speaking and making presentations.  The goal of every presentation is to engage the audience, present information clearly and memorably, and leave a lasting impression.  The topics covered will include getting and keeping the audience's attention, organizing content to meet desired goals, and speaking to influence others.

Learner Outcomes

Students will be able to: 1. Identify the process of perception and how it leads to one's reality. 2. Identify the specific steps to improve perception accuracy and avoid miscommunication. 3. Use different types of attention getters. 4. Select organizational patterns based on intended outcomes. 5. Identify specific skills necessary to make an effective presentation.
