Course Description

Author John R. K. Clark wrote the book, Kalaupapa Place Names, based upon his meticulous research of over 300 Hawaiian language newspaper articles, on-site visits, and personal interviews.  The webinar presents Clark and his insights about Kalaupapa's places and people.  

Speaker Bio:

John R. K. Clark is a former lifeguard and a retired deputy fire chief of the Honolulu Fire Department. He is the author of ten books about Hawai`i’s beaches, surf spots, and ocean lore, North Shore Place Names: Kahuku to Ka`ena and Hawaiian Surfing: Traditions from the Past.

Course Outline

To feature a community of courageous Hawaiians from every island, except Kaho`olawe, trying to live their lives as normally as possible in the face of the debilitating Hansen's disease.  

This webinar will provide participants with rich geographical, historical, cultural, and societal information.  

Learner Outcomes

To learn the date of and reason for Kalaupapa's establishment.

To describe the significance of different locations on Molokai, including Waikolu and Nihoa.
