Course Description

Welina mai, welcome! This course will introduce you to the traditional Hawaiian origins including ho'okele (navigation) and mo'oku'auhau (genealogies). The course also explores the natural and cultural environment of the Hawaiian Islands including placenames, mo'olelo, geological origins, and native ecosystems. We will also learn the origins of 'olelo Hawai'i (Hawaiian language) and its characteristics, significance, and poetic oratory. We will learn about the traditional Hawaiian structure of society, land use in ahupua'a divisions, as well as the lo'i kalo and loko i'a. We will also understand the historical changes to the society and land use, then explore the events that led up to the Overthrow in 1893. Then we learn about the revival of culture, language, and self-determination efforts to perpetuate the culture, language, and people.
