Course Description

This course is designed for individuals to build awareness of leadership qualities in today's diverse work environment. Based on core Hawaiian values, participants will learn strategies to manage and lead their teams to success through proven and timeless waiwai Hawaii, or Hawaiian values. Areas of focus include planning, organizing, coaching and motivating teams, solving problems and resolving conflicts.

Course Outline

I. Module 1: Na Konohiki
a. How fundamental Hawaiian family values (ie, pono, kuleana, `ike, kokua, aloha, and malama) were used in taking care of the land, plants, fish and people.
b. How these values are used to define roles, responsibilities and accountability.

II. Module 2: Na Mahi‘ai
a. Introduce the values of ahonui, kuleana, `ike, malama, laulima, and pono
b. How these values are used in planning and managing projects.

III. Module III: Lauhoe
a. Introduce the values of malama, `ohana, laulima, lokahi, and maika`i
b. How these values are used to build and motivate teams.

IV. Module IV: Ho‘oponopono
a. Introduce values such as pono, olu`olu, laulima, lokahi, and maika`i
b. How these values were used in the ancient practice of Ho’opono pono or conflict resolution.
c. How these values can be applied today to resolve conflicts.

Learner Outcomes

Incorporate core Hawaiian values into leadership functions such as:

  • Defining roles, responsibilities and accountabilities
  • Planning and managing projects
  • Building and motivating teams
  • Resolving conflict
