Course Description

Understanding of both HIPPA and OSHA operational standards as well as universal precautions related to specimen collection. Learning the scope of practice of a certified phlebotomist. Learning how to maintain integrity of the testing performed by the phlebotomy technicians. Learning how to maintain and trouble shoot the equipment. Performing quality control on all equipment and addressing ethical issues while obtaining all specimens. Understanding the different PPE protocol for each test and the exposure risk. Occupation safety, handwashing, CPR and exposure issues. Being able to obtain and run a wide variety of laboratory test dealing with, blood, urine, sputum, and cultures.

Learner Outcomes

  • Understand the role of the phlebotomy technicians in laboratory testing
  • Understand the role of phlebotomy technicians in patient care
  • Comprehend medical terminology related to phlebotomy
  • Be able to administer aseptic techniques
  • Able to identify the different blood components (e.g., serum, plasma, whole blood, RBC, WBC, platelets)
  • Identify and understand the different blood group systems (A, B, AB, O, Rh)
  • Able to identify the phlebotomy-related vascular anatomy (e.g., antecubital fossa, hand, foot)
  • Be able to understand the cardiovascular system (e.g., anatomy and physiology of the heart, pulmonary and systemic blood flow, blood vessels)
  • Understand the hemostasis and coagulation process
  • Be able to comprehend the impact of pre-analytical errors on test results
  • Understand the needlestick Safety and Prevention Act
  • Documentation and reporting requirements
  • Be able to express verbal and non-verbal communication (e.g., active listening; pace, tone, and volume of voice; personal space; use of jargon)
  • Understanding patient characteristics that can impact communication (e.g., cultural and religious differences, language barriers, cognitive level, developmental stage
  • Display Professionalism (e.g., integrity, punctuality, etiquette, respect, professional presentation)
  • Understand ethical standards applicable to the practice of phlebotomy (e.g., NHA code of ethics)
