Course Description

The non-credit Certified Nurse Aide is a state-approved 150-hour course combining lecture, lab, and clinical experience to prepare entry-level students to learn the basic nursing care for the elderly, the ill, and the disabled in long-term care sub-acute and home health settings. Students completing the training successfully will be eligible to sit for the certification exam to become certified nurse aides (CNAs).

All students must have current CPR and First Aid certifications and student liability insurance before enrollment. Other health documents and immunizations, criminal background checks and other requirements will be requested before beginning their clinical experience.

Course Outline

The KCC Certified Nurse Aide is a state-approved 150-hour course combining lecture, lab, and clinical experience to prepare entry-level students in learning the basic nursing care for the elderly, the ill, and the disabled in the long-term care, sub-acute, and home health settings. Students completing the training successfully will be eligible to sit for the certification exam to become certified nurse aides (CNAs).

Learner Outcomes

  • Describe the health care delivery system in Hawaii with special emphasis on agencies that care for the aged;
  • Demonstrate desirable attitudes and behaviors of the nurse aide under the supervision of the RN and/or LPN
  • Discuss the physical, psychological, cultural and social services needs of the patient/resident with an emphasis on the aged and cognitively impaired;
  • Perform within the legal limits of the nurse aide and promote patient/resident rights, confidentiality and the prevention of abuse;
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and restful patient care environment including infection control;
  • Use effective communication skills to interact with the patient/resident, family, peers and staff;
  • Perform basic patient care safely;
  • Assist the patient/resident to meet nutritional needs as required or ordered;
  • Make relevant observations and report and record them accurately and in a timely manner;
  • Identify the body systems and the major organs, common diseases, medical terminology and observations to report and record for each system;
  • Discuss adaptations to basic skills and the role of the nurse aide in restorative care and home care;
  • Discuss the needs and care of the terminally ill;
  • Perform selected therapeutic skills and procedures safely; and
  • Discuss career opportunities for the Nurse Aide.

Prerequisites

Proof of 9th-grade English level. Acceptable documents include college transcripts, placement test scores, prior college diplomas or certificates of training, etc.

Section Notes
Course meeting dates is online on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.  In-person instruction is on Saturdays from 8:00am to 3:30pm.
